My Jewish ancestors came to Australia in 1852 (my gggUncle Hirsch Fink (b. c.1822) with his wife Amelia nee Oppenheim and various of his sisters), and 1861 (their brother -and my gggGrandfather – Moses Fink (b. c.1810), his wife Gertrude Ascher and 9 of their eventual 11 children).
Moses and Gertrude were very assimilated: Child #10 was named Victoria after the colony where they landed; the other 10 had mostly German names, except #1 who was named Benjamin-Josman (only hyphenated in his Channel Islands birth record- thereafter all records present this as two consecutive names), after his Fink grandfather.
Of the 11 children, 4 definitely married within the Melbourne Jewish community [to a first cousin FINK, an ISAACS, a BRANDT and a LEON], 1 did not have married at all. The other 4 married out, including my direct line. Even so, my living aunt and her recently departed cousin [nee SHEIL] are both named after matriarchs [Deborah MOSES and Johanna MANNASA] from before the family emigrated. We have since started marrying back in
I have no documents and few alternative names: only family recollection, and what I can google. Electoral rolls have been good for Australia. I believe the Channel Island records are good too, but have no access to research done by my late grandmother Ruth [nee TIMMINS]’ late cousin Frith [BANBURY].
